The latest job report for September provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of employment in the United States. 

September’s Key Findings

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 254,000. The report reveals positive trends in key sectors despite a steady unemployment rate of 4.1 percent.

Sector-Specific Employment Trends

September’s employment landscape highlighted noteworthy shifts across the following sectors.

Food Services & Drinking Places

Food services and drinking places alone contributed 69,000 new jobs, far surpassing their previous monthly average. 

Healthcare

The healthcare sector added 45,000 jobs and saw notable increases in home healthcare services, hospitals, and nursing facilities. 

Government

Government employment also continued its upward trajectory, with significant hiring in local and state government roles. 

Social Assistance

Social assistance increased by 27,000 jobs in September, primarily in individual and family services.

Construction

Construction maintained consistent growth, adding 25,000 jobs, further bolstering the employment landscape. 

These sectors have demonstrated resilience and adaptability, continuing to contribute significantly to the nation's economic health.

Unemployment Rates

Despite the rise in employment figures, the national unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent in September. This consistent rate suggests that while job creation is robust, it hasn't yet made a significant dent in the total number of unemployed individuals, which stands at 6.8 million. 

Among major worker groups, the jobless rates for adult men, Caucasians, African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics showed little to no variation, indicating stable labor market conditions across these demographics. Interestingly, the unemployment rate for adult men experienced a slight decline, dropping to 3.7 percent. This stability in the unemployment rate underscores the balanced dynamics in the job market, where gains in employment are matched by steady labor force participation.

Impact Of Hurricane Francine

Despite the potential for significant disruption, Hurricane Francine's landfall in southern Louisiana on September 11, 2024, did not have a discernible effect on national payroll employment, hours, or earnings. Both the household and establishment surveys were conducted during this period, and the response rates remained within normal ranges, suggesting minimal impact on the data collection process. This stability amidst severe weather highlights the robustness of the employment infrastructure. The Bureau's analysis reinforces that Hurricane Francine did not skew the employment statistics, allowing for a clear assessment of the national job market trends unaffected by the hurricane.

Wage Growth & Average Workweek

In September, average hourly earnings for private nonfarm payroll employees increased by 13 cents, reaching $35.36. This represents a 4.0 percent rise over the past year, highlighting ongoing wage growth amid a competitive job market. For private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees, average hourly earnings grew by 8 cents to $30.33, reflecting a steady demand for skilled labor across various industries.

The average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls edged down slightly by 0.1 hour to 34.2 hours. In the manufacturing sector, the average workweek held steady at 40.0 hours, although overtime experienced a minor decline of 0.1 hour, bringing it to 2.9 hours. Meanwhile, production and nonsupervisory employees in private nonfarm payrolls maintained an average workweek of 33.7 hours.
